Black Gull Community Venue
Black Gull Community Venue

The Black Gull Community Venue located in the heart of Grimsby Docks run by Creative Start Arts In Heath CIC is a pioneering, first of its kind sober venue in the area offering a wide range of activities, including a coffee shop, sober events, creative workshops, recovery meetings and much more.

Their goal is to normalise sobriety and break down the stigma associated with addiction and recovery and to support people on their recovery journey, whether that’s making a decision to change or looking at the next steps in life.

The Great Escape building where the Blackgull Community venue is based, having been restored by the recovery community, stands as inspiration for what can be achieved by those who choose sober living.

Regular events scheduled are varied across music, performance and the arts. The recovery community leads on organising, promoting and hosting the events which are fully open to the public.

Additionally, they actively assist community-focused people and projects by offering flexible spaces for meetings, workshops, or performances to help them come to fruition.

Creative Start work from a recovery-focused, lived-experience approach. Because of this, they only accept self-referrals.

They believe recovery begins with choice, agency, and willingness. For that reason, they ask that individuals contact them themselves, rather than being referred on their behalf by another service.

If you’re interested in what Creative Start do, the best way to start is to:

Call directly, or attend one of their open meetings every Monday at 11am at The Comeback, and the recovery 'Eat and Meet' every Thursday between 11am and 3pm at the Great Escape, where anyone can just turn up and ask any questions that might be concerning them.
